The DOCUMERICA project was a photographic initiative from the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Running from 1972-77, DOCUMERICA’s remit was to "photographically document subjects of environmental concern" in the USA. More than 20,000 photographs make up in the DOCUMERICA archive held by the US National Archives, and all are now in the public domain.

The DOCUMERICA archive is often overlooked, and we are on a mission to change that. We want to restore the collection, one photograph at a time.

On this site you can explore restored DOCUMERICA photographs, download them for free in high resolution and read about DOCUMERICA’s background.

We are restoring the 20,000 photographs in the DOCUMERICA collection - one by one.
